Why do I need a retinal examination before cataract surgery?

Retinal conditions such as epiretinal membrane, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy can affect visual outcomes and the choice of IOL. When indicated, we perform a dilated retinal examination and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to assess the back of the eye. Removing a cataract does not necessarily correct every cause of reduced vision.
