What tests are used to diagnose retinal diseases?

Common tests include a dilated retinal examination and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Depending on the condition, we may also use ultra-widefield retinal imaging, ocular ultrasound, or fluorescein angiography. The tests needed vary according to the suspected retinal disease and how clearly we can view the inside of the eye.

What is the difference between monofocal and multifocal intraocular lenses?

A monofocal intraocular lens is generally designed to focus at one distance. Multifocal lenses are designed to reduce reliance on glasses at multiple distances. However, some multifocal IOLs can cause...

Why do I need a retinal examination before cataract surgery?

Retinal conditions such as epiretinal membrane, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy can affect visual outcomes and the choice of IOL. When indicated, we perform a dilated retina...

When does an intraocular lens need to be exchanged?

IOL exchange may be considered if a lens becomes dislocated, if its power is significantly different from what the eye needs, or if substantial lens-related symptoms persist despite treatment of other...
18

My intraocular lens has moved out of position. How can it be treated?

When an IOL moves out of its normal position, vision may become blurry or objects may appear doubled. Treatment may involve repositioning or exchanging the lens. If there is insufficient tissue to sup...

What is scleral fixation of an intraocular lens?

Scleral fixation is a procedure used when an IOL cannot be supported reliably in its normal position. The lens haptics are secured to the sclera, the white outer wall of the eye. The Yamane technique ...

Do I need a new IOL if I develop a secondary cataract?

What is commonly called a “secondary cataract” is usually posterior capsule opacification (PCO). When treatment is needed, it can often be managed with a YAG laser capsulotomy rather than an IOL excha...

Can an intraocular lens still be exchanged many years after cataract surgery?

An older IOL may still be exchanged, but surgery can become more challenging as adhesions develop between the lens and capsular bag over time. We compare the likely benefits and risks of exchange and ...

If there is bleeding inside my eye, will I need surgery right away?

It depends on what caused the bleeding and the condition of the retina. In some cases, vitreous hemorrhage can be monitored while the blood clears. However, prompt evaluation and possibly surgery may ...

Can I be evaluated if problems develop after retinal surgery elsewhere?

Yes. If you may have recurrent retinal detachment, persistent bleeding, or changes in the macula after surgery, we can examine your eye and review possible treatments. If available, please bring the d...

I have been told I may have retinal detachment. Where should I go?

If retinal detachment is suspected or has been diagnosed, it is important to be examined promptly by an eye specialist who can assess the retina thoroughly. When choosing a clinic, check whether retin...

Does retinal detachment need to be operated on urgently?

Retinal detachment is an eye emergency, and the timing of surgery can have a major impact on vision after treatment. Prompt surgery is particularly important before the macula, the part of the retina ...

What is the difference between air and gas used during retinal detachment surgery?

During retinal detachment surgery, air or a medical gas may be placed inside the eye to help keep the retina in position while it heals. Air is absorbed faster than longer-acting gases, which can allo...
