What is the difference between air and gas used during retinal detachment surgery?

During retinal detachment surgery, air or a medical gas may be placed inside the eye to help keep the retina in position while it heals. Air is absorbed faster than longer-acting gases, which can allow the view through the eye and everyday activities to recover sooner. Air usually absorbs within about 10 days, whereas some gases may remain for several weeks or longer. At First Samsung Eye Clinic, Dr. Sung-Jin Na prioritizes air tamponade when it is expected to provide adequate support after retinal traction has been released and subretinal fluid has been drained as completely as possible. Longer-acting gas or silicone oil may be more appropriate in complex cases or when prolonged internal support is needed.

Can I have cataract surgery if I previously had LASIK or LASEK?

Yes. However, previous LASIK or LASEK changes the shape of the cornea, which can make calculating the correct IOL power more challenging. Pre-existing irregular astigmatism or higher-order aberrations...

My intraocular lens has moved out of position. How can it be treated?

When an IOL moves out of its normal position, vision may become blurry or objects may appear doubled. Treatment may involve repositioning or exchanging the lens. If there is insufficient tissue to sup...

What is scleral fixation of an intraocular lens?

Scleral fixation is a procedure used when an IOL cannot be supported reliably in its normal position. The lens haptics are secured to the sclera, the white outer wall of the eye. The Yamane technique ...

Can I come for a second opinion if I had cataract surgery at another clinic?

Yes. We can evaluate concerns or symptoms following cataract surgery performed elsewhere. Previous surgical records, the date of surgery, and the model and power of your implanted IOL are helpful, but...

Does an epiretinal membrane always need to be removed?

Not necessarily. If blurred or distorted vision is mild and OCT scans show little change, observation may be appropriate. Surgery may be considered if symptoms begin to interfere with daily activities...

Is a retinal tear the same as retinal detachment?

No. A retinal tear or hole is a break in the retina, while retinal detachment occurs when the retina separates from the tissue beneath it. Some retinal tears can be treated with laser before detachmen...

When is it safe to fly after retinal detachment surgery?

The timing depends on the type of bubble placed inside your eye. Flying while any air or gas remains can cause the bubble to expand as cabin pressure decreases, leading to a dangerous rise in eye pres...

Can retinal detachment happen again after surgery?

Yes. Retinal detachment can recur because of a new retinal break, remaining traction, or proliferative vitreoretinopathy, among other causes. Keep your scheduled retinal follow-up appointments, and se...
