Dr. Sungho Choi of First Samsung Eye Clinic has published a clinical research paper on trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) in patients with a history of laser refractive surgery in the renowned international journal, Journal of Ophthalmology. Eyes that have previously undergone laser refractive surgery (LRS), such as LASIK or PRK, present altered corneal anatomy. Consequently, achieving accurate IOL power prediction and delivering sharp visual quality during subsequent cataract surgery is considered a highly demanding clinical challenge.
This study drew substantial attention from the academic community by thoroughly evaluating the postoperative clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction following the implantation of the Clareon PanOptix, a modern hydrophobic acrylic trifocal IOL.
The key clinical research findings identified in this study are as follows: 1. Restoration of comprehensive vision across distance, intermediate, and near ranges, achieving complete spectacle independence 2. High refractive predictability, with 81% of eyes within ±0.50 D of the target through meticulous preoperative corneal higher-order aberration (HOA) analysis 3. High patient satisfaction, averaging 3.09 on a 0–4 scale, with 0% reporting dissatisfaction
These findings objectively demonstrate that even in eyes with altered corneal geometry, safe and optimal visual restoration is achievable with multifocal IOLs when precise, tailored measurement formulas and diagnostic protocols are applied. Going beyond routine surgical delivery, this study successfully minimized refractive errors through a multidimensional analysis of each patient's ocular profile, reaffirming First Samsung Eye Clinic's academic excellence and world-class precision care. ![]() As always, First Samsung Eye Clinic remains dedicated to providing the highest standard of medical care through continuous research.
